Try Strava - it's free, but does the same thing and more.
It has a huge database of riders, and every run, it compares you to other people who do the same route, or sections of your route. (I found out that I am the 4th fastest person to ride on the firetrail that runs past St. Mary's Lighthouse, and the 7th fastest to do the run through the dene along the coast.)
I have just set a couple of runs along the Coast Road to get a leaderboard going with some of the people I work with.
I'm just looking on strava for your runs along the coast road but I can't see anything? Are they invite only?
I've recorded my ride to work and will segment it up later for willing stravaists. Quite surprised to see that no-one has set any segments along the NCN72 route... just have to do it myself.0 -
Went on my first ride 2 days ago it was 7.44 miles with a avg speed of 10mph thought i was gonna be dead after but i wanted to keep going.Think it also helped that i rode with a friends/family member and it was his real first ride also.0

Apologies for the hijack, but I know there are a lot of north east riders on this thread.
If you have lost a Cube mountain bike, Trek SL 1200 - black/red/white/silver or Giant GSR 400 - grey, then please have a look for a thread over at Singletrackworld (search using Trek SL 1200 for instance) as they have been recovered from a "fence" and the police want more info to ensure they can lock the toe-rag away.0 -

TukTuk - perhaps we need to change the title of this thread - it's turning into the Newcastle and District Cycle club!
And Tomoj - the map on Strava's Explore tab only seems to show the climbs. You have to zoom right in. As you do, more and more segments pop up. I've set up a couple of segments so far (all public) - the Coast Road (eastern half) and one through Gosforth Golf Course (which I called Gosforth Golf Course!).
My rides along the coast are all using segments that other riders have set up. If you beat a time, you appear on their leaderboads too2007 Felt Q720 (the ratbike)

RAK1963 post up a link to the page on here to see if anyone has any info on it
Newcastle and District Cycle club, i like it Shall i contact a moderator to do that ?
Clips are going well, had a hairy moment yesterday when stopping to cross over a slip road at the coast road where i pulled up as i twisted and very nearly went over. But otherwise im clipping in and out near enough first time every time!
The bike isnt doing so well, as you guys have probably already gathered im not very technically minded but i have located a clicking noise at the front gears or the bottom bracket. It sounds like firecrackers going off, and happens pretty much all the way through the pedal stroke and only when im pedalling.
Im assuming it is the bottom bracket which i guess i need to take it into the local shop for.0 -

Are you sure its not just the chain rubbing against the front de-railer? Does it happen in every gear
I like the idea of the Newcastle and District Cycle club
Last week was my first full 5 day week by bike. 125miles total averaging about 14mph. Getting back on yesterday after the weekend break was slow going due to too much alcohol in the Sunday afternoon sun. But I jumped on this morning and knocked 60seconds off my fastest ride. Total faster than my first attempt is now 13mins!
I was good when I got into work on friday one of girls who drives a similar route to me left work before me on Thursday evening, and only overtook me taking my turn off at wardley on the felling bypass 5miles in 8)
I've now given up on strava and gone back to runkeeper. I was making no impression on the leader boards for the segments, there are clearly some very fast riders on my route and I missed the audio cues too much.0 -
It doesnt look like its rubbing on it but you could well be right. I changed up and down all the gears but it still happened
I had this at the very start with one click per revolution but that seemed to dissapear, i think it needs looking at this time.
I suppose it could be the pedals ? They were changed recently for the spd-sl ones but it didnt happen straight away. I dunno its baffling me haha, i will have to drop it by a shop to see what they think0 -

Hope the owners of those bikes come forward!
Does anyone know where you can get the screws for the shimano cleats plus the square washer ?
I was having a nightmare lastnight getting clipped back in and again thismorning on the way into the office, looked at my cleat and i have lost 1 screw and the others were barely threaded on! I cant have tightened them enough and with it being the shoe i clip in/out with the most i have worked them loose!0 -
eBay is your friend0
-
Ahh never though of that, cheers.
I have moved a bolt over from the left shoe onto the right which I release the most and tightened them right up!
Im off the bike for the rest of the week anyways after this afternoon as im away to London and Peterborough with work.0 -
Just downloaded strava and had a quick peek at the times around the north east, i dont know if im looking at the wrong things but they all seem to be quite short distances ? Speeds look impressive though!
Ordered a little cycle computer today along wih a multi tool for when im out an about, just incase.
A friend of a friend has recommended i take my bike over to prudhoe for them to have a look at the clicking noises so im going to try and fit it into the company car an take it over at the weekend0 -
Yeah, the segments tend to be about a mile or so in towns but you can set your own up if you want a longer section.0
-
People tend to set up small segments (especially on hilly bits), so that they can thrash through it and then have time to recover.
The segments that I have set cover areas that are off road - I don't want to get run over while I'm trying to shave a couple of seconds off my fastest time.
It's also good for finding out who else travels down the same routes as you. Someone at my work has already accompanied me to the coast last night. He found out that he was going an additional 2 miles and was doing it all on the road. I only spend a 1/4 of my commute on the road.2007 Felt Q720 (the ratbike)

in response to popular demand... sort of, I've created the Tyne and Wear commuter thread in commuting chat. Hope you'll feel free to chip in.0
