Cracked Frame

Hi there,
I have a Boardman Hybrid Comp. I've had it since last April and have done about 2.5k riding to work and going out at weekends. I've had no issues with the bike so far and am really pleased with it.
Yesterday I popped into Halfords to have a shifter replaced under warranty and the guy doing the swap noticed that there was a crack in the frame on the top of the top tube where it meets the seat tube.
I'd not noticed it until then but the crack was all the way through to the inside of the tube.
The guy at Halfords was asking me if I'd been 'riding it hard'. Not sure what he means by that. I ride the bike fast if that's what he means but I avoid the many potholes littering Sheffields roads and I never leave tarmac.
Halfords are replacing the frame under warranty so my only loss is a week without a bike but is this sort of thing common? I'm not the slimmest person but I'm not massive so I don't think weight is a factor but now I'm wondering. I ride the bike as fast as I can because I enjoy doing so and it gives a better workout but I see others going much faster than I do.
Essentially, what I am asking is have I done something wrong? Am I abusing my bike beyond it's design spec?
Cheers,
Christian

I wouldn't worry that you're doing anything wrong, or that you're too heavy. Cracked frames aren't common but they're not that rare either- sometimes they just crack. I'd just take the warranty replacement and forget about it.0

I have to admit I have had nothing but good service, good advice and most importantly a good bike setup from Halfords on Guernsey Road in Sheffield.
They have been excellent. So excellent in fact that I will shortly be going back to buy a road bike for the spring/summer from the same branch.0
