Straight Steere into tapered headset - crown race?

I will shortly need to fit a straight steerer fork into a tapered frame and headset. The headset comes with the adapter to allow this so that should be fine, however my question is does the adapter go onto the fork inplace of the crown race or on top of the race?
I presume if the latter then the headset will come with the race too as they are generally headset specific?

I was assuming that there was a generic answer to be honest. The fork shouldn't make any difference should it, only the steerer size?
Frame will be Giant Trance X
Headset - whatever comes with the frame
Fork RockShox Reba Team 2010 Maxxle
Presumably on yours then the the reducer has to be pressed onto the fork that same as a "normal" crown race, was this tough to do? I have previously used a piece of plastic waste pipe and mallet to tap the alluminium corwn race on, looking at the reducers this would not be so easy.0 -
when i was looking for a headset for my butcher last year i sure i seen one cant remember what make that the cup was the reducer not the crown race..
the forks should not make a difference no only the size of the steerer tube. like i said the ones i have both canecreek the reducer is the crown race and it just knocks onto the steerer as you would a 1/18 crownrace. same on the chrisking headset on our kids bike.
the only thing i struggled with was when fitting a 1.5 tapered fork to our kids bike the crown race setter tool we got would not fit the 1.5 steerer, it was to wide. so improvise a hope hub support is the perfect size for a 1.5 crownrace...www.bearbackbiking.com

OK, sounds fairly simple then. I might just have to find a suitable sized metal tube instead of teh plastic one as it mat take a bit more effort to knock on. Failing that there is always the LBS :shock:0

if you are using a 1/18 fork (steerer) with a reducer crown race, it will instal the same as a standard crown race.
does'nt take any more effort to whack on..
it was the 1.5 crown race on our kids bike that caused problems. 1.5 crownrace being fatter our setter tool would not fit,, so i used a hope hub support as it fit perfectly,, even the 1.5 did not require any extra force to seat the crownrace....www.bearbackbiking.com
