Cervelo Soloist

I thought I'd bung up a picture of my Cervelo Soloist, it's not my best bike, but is one that I feel is the best looking.

Strangely this started out as my Turbo bike and has slowly developed into my Monday/Thursday Night Training/Summer Chain Gang Bike.

When I first rode it I thought I had lost a few fillings it was that stiff and you felt every single change in the road surface, but slowly I have got used to it.

I find the geometry perfect for my style of riding and when I get enough cash together, I will upgrade my Look 585 to a Cervelo with similar geometry, probably the R5?

Specs are: -

2006 Cervelo Soloist Aluminium Frame
Record 11 Speed Groupset, a mix of 2010 & 2011
53/39 Cranks
27/12 Record Cassette
Campag Record Pro-fit Pedals
Cinelli Neo Carbon Stem
Cinelli Neo Carbon Bars
Fizik Arione Saddle
Fizik Bar Tape
The wheels I built myself using 50mm Chinese Tubular rims, Sapim X-Ray 20/24 Spokes, Novatec Hubs
Continental Sprinter Gatorskin Tubs
Elite Cages

Yep that is a rear Topeak light you can see, as most of our Monday/Thursday Evening rides end up finishing in the dark, then I really don't have a lot of choice, but I thought that one was discreet and powerful.

For Aluminium the total weight is 17lb (including Pedals and Bottle Cages), the wheels come in at 1480g which isn't bad for 50mm rims.

I'm pleased how it has come out and it still looks cool when I switch to using the Campag Neutron wheels on it as well!

When I built this I deliberately installed the cables continental style (Front Brake on the left, rear brake on the right) and liked it so much, that I had to switch my other 3 road bikes to a similar style, I just feel so much more in control.

Cool, smart looking bike. Funny how a b bike can become an a bike through the sheer joy of riding it.

Reference the R5 note that the geometry changed for these frames and the tt and heat tube lengths grew accordingly. The 56cm R5 for example has a 173mm head tube to aid climbing and descending, so not as low and lean as your bike or the S2/3 where as the new S5 again has a taller head tube. The r5 also lost 1mm off the tt tube length - still reach based though so you should get a good fit with a Cervelo frame.

I'm not a fan of the Cervelo styling or the brand. Just doesn't do it for me but I think this has changed my mind.
I think I want one now.

Do you think 1mm difference in top tube length really matters?

Drop my ex-wife an email for the answer...? 8)

I would have said not, but Cervelo may beg to differ. It is of course a gnats hair...!
  • I didn't mean the geometry, more how the bike is setup, if your trying to match one bike to another. Don't think 1mm is going to make an awful lot of difference.

And it's OK, you can keep your ex wife's email address...

It didn't start out that way, I was looking for an aluminium frame for the turbo and this one came up at a very good price, sort of escalated from there

Thanks, no, but I really enjoy riding it, my best bike is a LOOK 585 with Super Record, the frame is about 2007, but when monies allow and if I can't afford a C59 or EPQ then an R5 or similar will replace the LOOK.

I don't have a lot of money, no holidays or pubs, and everything I buy is second hand and I build myself, so just shows how much you can save, I bet this has cost less than £1500! :-)
  • very clever! your possibly the most economical person i've ever encountered on the interwebz! :D:lol:

have you put a picture of your LOOK up? :)

No I haven't, but I will do when I take some photos, but it doesn't look as cool as the Cervelo.
