My new build will be a single 34 maybe 36 single ten but not sure whether I should be useing a medium cage rear mech or stick with the long :?

Stick with what you have as it will work fine.

Oops sorry when I said stick with the long what I mean't was I have always had long running double or triples. Now starting from scratch I have neither but the choice

An MTB short cage will usually work fine for 1x9, check out the relevant tech docs on Shimano/SRAM websites.
