whilst Ive been search around looking at different bikes (sub £1000 hardtails) ive been trying to work out the order of quality of shimano gearsets
ive looked on the shimano site http://bike.shimano.com/#
and i guess in the mountain bike drop down menu the best is at the top (XTR) going downwards in quaility to alivio at the bottom?
also with hyd disc brakes how do shimano comapre to Tektro
thanks

In a nutshell, yes. But some lower end stuff can last longer than higher end because of heavier steel bits.
Tektro are mainly a budget brake manufacturer, the Auriga and Draco units are about Alivio level.0 -
thanks very much0

I used to have Tektro hydro's on my old GT, They stopped you pretty quick but had no modulation, your brakes were on, or they were off. They were certainly decent for the price level though. I much prefer Shimano though, reliable, decent and not too expensive!Very funny Scotty, now beam me down my clothes.0

For around £1000 you wouldn't get anything less then SLX ( or that's why I would expect )
So from low end to high:
Deore
SLX
XT
XTR
Swore stuff is still pretty good, but SLX or XT is where it's at..
I have tektro brakes on my commencal, they work ok, better then any cable jobby and stop well enough..
Got XT brakes on my ghost and they are worlds apart from the tektros.. .Always remember.... Wherever you go, there you are.
