Cheap cycling computerss?

Hi everyone 8)

Does anyone know of any cheap cycling computers?

Preferably the ones that measure speed, distance and time.

Oh, and by the way, this forum is much nicer than RCUK's. You people are alot friendlier Pardon the language but I get alot less of the bullshit in my answers on here 8)

Depends what you mean by cheap really. I'd go wireless for convenience, so maybe a Cateye Velo Wireless at £20 or so? Ebay has a few at £20

I got one of these - its wired and so not up to date tech but it's 100% reliable, robust and cheap (and the batteries will last cause its not wireless):

+1 for this option, decent little computer. Only issue is battery life - but even then the display battery should last a year and the sensor battery will last longer, and it doesn't cost much to replace the batteries.

Smartphone + strava is cheapest option, then get a £10 waterproof bike mount. (assuming u have a smartphone)

This thing does all the stuff you would want from a bike computer like a cateye etc but much more besides.

Granted, these things are not the most stylish GPS recievers you can buy but they certainly are the cheapest. They work too. Brilliantly. I've got a slightly higher model than this one (but still cheap) which you can even follow routes on.

Worth a thought at least if only to get involved with Strava, which is definitely up there with the other most enjoyable things you can do on two wheels.

Before spending any money at all, consider what you have in terms of mobile phone. I use a free app called Sportstracker - totally free and gives you all sorts of info such as average spped, max speed, estimated calories burned, and will also plot on a map where you have been.
Apps like Sportstracker can be found for most smart phones.

I also highly recommend Viewranger - it's not cheap but allows you to sit at home, plan routes on your computer and then follow them on your phone.

There's a few free apps that allow you to do this, i personally use osmand for android, great little app.

I've not got a bike computer now - I used to have a Cateye that was pretty reliable.

Nowadays I have the GPS on the phone running so that I can clock the total riding distance for my records, but I don't need to see it as I'm riding. It doesn't really matter what speed you're riding at - the wind and terrain mess you round too much.

I've had two cateye velo's, they stopped working when it rains as the water gets into the internals. Most of the wired ones I've had (cateye, halfords, sigma), stop working properly when it rains/gets wet due to moisture on the contacts.

Wireless ones have worked better in the rain but not so good in the cold, and the sealing of the units are sometimes poor.

I've had everything from £4 aldi to £30 cateye and blackburn models, nothing worked for long. the best results I've had have been since getting a garmin unit.

Don't expect cheap anything to last for long.
