2 x 10 chain length setting?

Hi all
I'm just setting up my new 2 x 10 XT set up and seem to have a problem with chain length.
I've got an XT Shadow rear mech, 11-34 cassette, 28-40 chainset and Sram PC1091 chain.
According to the chain instructions I should add 1 link + powerlock connector when on 34t rear and 40t front when not running through the rear mech.
When I'm trying to set the gears up, the chain won't stay on the front ring and the rear mech is overly stretched.
Is there a different chain length set up for 2 x 10?
