hi all

been commuting to work now since sept 2011 and really enjoyed the winter challenge and was surprised how good it was i was sort of dreading it

well i have a diamond back response on a ride to work scheme
i fid it does well on my small ride of 6.6 miles each way to work

but i sometimes feel like i have a drag on the bike i believe it could be allot to do with the standard tyres i have very chunky 26x2.1

i have just been looking online for a new set of tyres for better road use as 75% of my ride is road a little gravel and some ride ways
and been looking as some not so chunky tyres and there is soooo much to choose from but found theses
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/con ... 49#reviews
are they what i should be looking for or could theses do me a treat
could anyone maybe point out a set of tyres that would be better for my use

many thanks baz

  • Now it is approaching spring/summer, would it be worth buying slicks? Especially if you are only using it for your commute.
A mate of mine couldn't be bothered changing the tyres on his MTB and has been riding Conti Travel Contacts all winter...
He had a few difficulties on one particularly muddy XC ride we went on, but he has been ok on everything else.

a bloke at my wires work has those seem to work well he says, though if your just using the bike for the commute i'd be tempted to go to Marathon's which are faster than nobbles can handle light offroading, last for ever plus very resistant to punctures.

If it's mainly for the road, I'd go with tough slicks e.g. Spesh Armadillos rather than nobblies.
    FCN 2-4.

    "Exactly."

+1 for Specialized Armadillos. A good fast tyre, really durable.
If you're not going to go off-road you don't need off-road tyres. You'll be amazed at how much faster you go on slicks on an MTB on tarmac.
  • many thanks for all the choices peeps

as my currant tyres ar a 26*2.1 and i good to fit 26*1.75 from what i have read this seem fine just wanted to double check

I have just bought a set of continental ultragatorskin hardshell [sounds more like a lizard doesn't it] fitted by my lbs.
I had a run of punctures on my Surosa commuter bike which ran schwalbe tyres. Hopefully I'll have more luck with these also opted for a slightly wider 25" rather than 23" tyre
    Commuter Surosa Toledo S34 Audax
Best Bike Merida Road Race 901-18

In truth i love them both

Commonly, tyres found on off the peg bikes will be from the bottom end of the range (even on fairly pricey bikes). You’ve replaced a tyre that most likely had no (or minimal) puncture protection with one that does so you should be a lot less likely to suffer punctures.

The brands are largely irrelevant though, schwalbe do some very highly regarded tyres with good puncture protection (marathon plus, durano plus etc) and Conti do plenty of tyres without.

Plus 2 on the Armadillos. I think Conti tires are overpriced, but thats just me.
