I have exactly £1000 to spend on a new bike not a penny more, Mainly for XC use, has to be new and from a retailer, is there such thing as a full sus for this price, if not what would give me the best bang for buck in a HT?

Both good FS and HTs are available for this money, but the HT will be generally lighter and bette specced.

For an FS, take a look at the Giant Anthem:

And for a HT, the Boardman Pro:

Or the Boardman FS Team, for a well respected full suss that just squeaks in under your limit.

    Cheers

    Hi,

I'm also looking to get a HT via Cycletowork scheme.

So far I have narrowed it down to Orange G4 2011 £799 RockShox Recon Gold R Solo Air Forks or Cube Bikes LTD Pro 29 2012 £855 with Reba RL 29 Fork.

Anyone got a view on which would be better for road and Trail/XC use on weekends?
  • Have you checked that the Cube is in stock? I'm finding it very difficult to track a Cube 29er down.

I am always impressed with the specs on all of their bikes.
Still not convinced about the benefits of the 29 over a 26, but the Cube specs are very close to the 26" version and unlike other brands is close in cost and advertised weight too.

I have a Race SL - which retails at a touch over £1000 (but I got cash off as it was through a friend). Good XC bike - comfortable and light.
    2007 Felt Q720 (the ratbike)
2012 Cube Ltd SL (the hardtail XC 26er)
    2014 Lapierre Zesty TR 329 (the full-sus 29er)

Stock was low back in Jan on the Ltd Pro 29er. I called Cube's UK suppport (a german number), and asked them if they could tell me which retailers might have some in stock. They looked at recent deliveries and gave me list of 6 or so shops to try (no regional bias though, ranged from Aberdeen to Canterbury!!). I got lucky and found one in stock, in my size, just a short train ride away.

Not had much chance to ride it yet due to a shoulder injury, but I'm liking it so far.

For that price a great spec for a hardtail, never mind a full susser, and good reviews of the frame.

Spoke with work today and apparently the £1000 is excluding VAT, so it would seem i can spend up to £1200
