right ive got a vauxhall astra hatchback its a 54 plate so not the newest shape and i want a cycle rack for taking mine and the ladys bike when we go camping in the lakes and in cornwall,

ive got some roof bars but i was wandering how much the drag would affect fuel consumption on longer drives or would it be better to get a boot style one

thanks for any advice on this as i havnt got a clue

Boot mounted; either get a high level one so it doesn't obstruct the number plate / lights, or if you have a towbar fitted, get one that mounts on that and a repeater board for number plate / lights hooked up to the electrics.

Either of those will also create quite a lot of drag. Beware also that a low level one plays havoc vith a rear parking sensor

Roof mounted is easier in that you can still get in / out of the boot, but as you say, less fuel efficient. Also a bit of a struggle lifting the things on / off.

Have a look at the Saris Bones model of bike racks, I have one that holds 3 x bikes and can sit reasonably high on the back so it doesn't obscure lights or the reg plate (much). Folds up nicely and fits in the boot when you're not using it. Using it the first time is a bit fiddly but after that you can have it on and off in 5 mins.
