New build - chain/front chainring problem

Hi,

I've just finished building a new bike up, and everything works fine except for when I try to change down from the big chainring to the small.

The chain drops down but doesn't click into place on the small chain ring. The picture shows where it ends up - almost on top of the teeth. I've measure the chain using small/large gear method and added two links as it says - do I need more or less links?

Thanks in advance
Mike

Chain length shouldn't be an issue here. Is the mech coming back far enough?

Yeah, I though that before but I even moved the limit screw so it came back further but still no joy.

If I play with the RD and go up or down a couple of times the chain clicks in.
This is all on the stand (well my tennis ball tube under the BB which works brilliantly as a stand :D) so don't know if it would be any different when under load?

Never heard of the small large way. It has always been large large.

But it looks like poor set up.

    Why is what?

What is new and what is not.

Ah yeah, I couldn't remember the name but I took it off Sheldon Brown.

Everythings new - Tiagra crankset and chain, 105 cassette. Using Microshift levers.

I'd try riding it before you do anything else. It might be ok.

It does sound like the cage of the DR is holding it too far in which is stopping it from dropping down.

Check derailleur alignment. Unlikely to be a chain length fault.
