On Sunday, I managed to snap a Shimano XTR Trail pedal axle, my first ever Shimano product failure.
I've been riding since the early 80's and never bust anything Shimano, Have you?..

LX crank arm
More rear mechs than I care to mention
Roadie combined brake gear levers
That's it though. Pretty small failure rate given the amount I've owned.A Flock of Birds

Failed due to mechanical and structural failure?
Failed due to impact?
Failed due to wearing out?
I'm impressed with the resilience of Shimano stuff, I was a little surprised that the pedal became 'clipless' at the axle rather than the cleat... :0)Ibis Mojo HD 2011 www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php? ... t=12842777

Can't think of anything that's just broken.
Mechs from crashing and that's about it.I don't do smileys.

doesn't look snapped, just that its pulled off the axle?
Gone through a load of rear mechs, think I'm on 6 in 7 years, buggered the splines on my lx arms, knackered 3 shimano hubs and swear never to use them again, bit other than hubs I would use anything shimano tbh, not keen on their chains, but their cranks are second to none, new style brakes are the best around and the soon to be released range of shadow+ mechs will be massive hits.0 -

I wish I was... It was a fireroad leading from Swinley carpark, just got to the end of the 'Go Ape' bit and it snapped!Ibis Mojo HD 2011 www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php? ... t=12842777

SRAM stuff really does spontaneously fail more often IME! I had an X.0 carbon cage snap in half riding on the road, which was irritating. Seen plenty of X.9 mechs break at the knuckle too. Seen plenty of broken shifters.
I don't think I've ever 'just' broken a Shimano part, worn out plenty and damaged them, but save for an XTR chain I snapped (at the side plate) after 200 yards I can't think of any other failures. Had a couple of (road) STIs fail due to bits of cable getting into them, but that's one of those things.0 -
Can't recall anything from Shimano that has spontaneously broken. An XT shifter failed once because of neglect but I have brakes/hubs/pedals from the 90s in the shed that still work0
-
Sora STI right hand (rear mech) shifter... Although worn out may be a better description as it lasted about 8 years before it finally stopped working...0
-
Never had a complaint, can't think of anything Shimano that has failed due to manufacturing error. Had a Tioga seatpost that was destroyed after one ride, Fire Pros than pinchflatted more than I can count, some old Superstar pads that didn't last long enough (new ones seem to be fine)... All in all I trust the companies I use and the components to be fit for purpose.
--edit--
Did have an SLX shifter that locked up last year. Couldn't get the thing moving again so had to replace. No damage, not particularly worn... First ever Shimano failure.0 -
I'm not exactly up to date with this as I run 8 speed XTR on all 3 bikes and am just moving to 9 on one!
I have had the odd XT and XTR shifter pod fail - always seems to be the fronts that go first.
Shimano chains I gave up on a long time ago - never had one snap, but some started to get sticky quickly, one immediately on install, the links just wouldn't move smoothly. I switched to the higher-end sachs (now SRAM) chains a while back and far far prefer them - the easy splitting/joining being a major bonus...
Apart from the odd shifter pod and chain, though, all has been faultless in over 15 years keen MTB - the only stuff that has broken has had a stick or a rock in it!0 -

^^^ this, in general found them particularly vague & plasticy, also had an SLX front mech seize solid, could have been abuse/maintenance I guess, but all of the XT/XTR stuff I've owned has been fine...0
