Hi there

As per the title, my tyres are looking a little warn so am on the look out for a new set (Raching ralph/nobby nic). Where's the cheapest place on the net to buy them? CRC/Wiggle don't seem particularly cheap.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Ash

  • Depends.

I use nextdaytyres.com because they're pretty cheap and are lightning fast with delivery.
Merlin and On-one often have very good deals on, although be careful if you are specifically after this years model, they sometimes have older versions.
Outright cheapest would probably be one of the German sites though.

I just bought a Rocket Ron and a Racing Ralph from bike-discount.de, both 2.25 Evo snakeskin spec. Total cost £63 inc delivery. Ordered Sunday, delivered UK Weds.

+1 for next day tyres. I ordered a pair of Nobby Nics last Thursday at 1200 and they were with me Friday at 1200.

I've used both bike-discount.de and nextdaytyres.com and been pleased with both. bike-discount are slightly cheaper and stock the Nobby Nic in Trailstar compound if that's what you want.

Not enough time to google, but expect us to have the time to do it for you? You haven't even said what Schwalbe tyres you want, City Jets are good value at Halfords.

Are they not Performance ones rather than Evo?

There's so many variatons of Schwalbe tyres. Evo, Snakeskin, Pacestar, Performance.

Anyone able to explain the differences?

It's probably on the Schwalbe site.

But Pacestar = slightly harder/faster rolling rubber
Trailstar/Triplestar is a triple compound blend, with softer edges. Some tyres come in a pair, with a pacestar for the back and trailstar for the front.

Snakeskin is a tougher sidewall. So any tyre could have that, and it doesn't affect the compund.

I think Performance is the cheapo bog standard version.

    Sort of.

Performance use the 'ORC' compound, they're heavier and slightly tougher than the Evos, still reasonable though, a good bet.

The top end ones use the lighter (and more fragile) Evo carcass. Pre-2011 tyres were Triple Nano which used 3 different compounds. Non tubeless ready beads (but they worked very well as tubeless).

From 2011 they are still triple compound, but now called Pacestar (for the XC biased tyres), Trailstar (for the ones in the middle), Gatestar (for 4x) and Vertstar (for full on DH tyres). They all have tubeless ready beads.

There are different carcasses within that, for example the Ralph and Nic are a heavier/tougher carcass than the Ron/Dan/Fred.

    Snakeskin is a reinforced sidewall.

Double Defence is a reinforced carcass and sidewall.
