Well, so much for the try before you buy concept! Rang around all my local bike shops (well the ones that stood any chance of being useful!) and no-one has any of the bikes I want to try, not even to sit on for sizing 
Looks like Giant especially are an issue, I've been told it will be a couple of months before any stock will be available.
Dilemma now as I have been offered a new 2012 Trance X frame for £899, but not sure how long that offer will stand.

Might be worth trying the not so useful shops as they might have in stock what you are looking for
