Chainset Replacement

I've been running an 8 speed Shimano Alivio chainset which came with my 2010 Hardrock Pro and the middle chainring needs replacing after 12 months. Over the last year I've done nearly 4000 miles of commuting and AM riding in all weather conditions so the bike has had a good hammering but been well serviced and cleaned.
My dilemma is should I just replace the chainring or upgrade to something like SLX whilst still running 8 speed and if I do upgrade will I notice any difference in performance and wear rate as otherwise I'm quite happy with the Alivio which I have also just replaced the BB after 2 years?

If you change the crankset there is a good chance you will need to change the BB as well.
Just get a new 32T 104 BCD chainring."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
