Halfords Bike Warranty and Servicing

In January I bought a Carrera Vulcan from Halfords on the back on the 5 star MBUK magazine test.

The bike has a Carrera 12 month warranty. It is coming up for its free 6 week check. There is nothing wrong with the bike, any cable tightening or adjusting that needed doing I have done (Im a mechanical engineer myself).

What I want to know is if I dont take the bike back to Halfords for its 6 week check, will it invalidate my warranty?

I looked over the paperork, on the back of the Halfords receipt it says its got 12 month warranty providing the bike is serviced at the manufacturers reccomendations.
In the carrera book it says they reccomend taking advantage of the Halfords 6 week bike check.

I just dont want Halfords to knacker it up! When I got it, loads of bits were loose, not all the brake hose clips were on the bike, the brake calipers were mounted rubbish and the handlebar wasnt even fitted in the stem centrally.

Let them do the service as per the warranty then check the bike over yourself

That way you fulfil the warranty requirements and are safe in the knowledge that your bike is good to go once you've checked it

I second that. Only takes one jobsworth to be unrealistically unreasonable if something does go wrong. :)

ALso remember your consumer rights protect you more than the warranty. Especially one that is a mere 12 months!

I never bothered with the 6 week check, nor did i allow them to build the bike for me in the first place, but they carried out a warranty claim on the freehub after 6 months or so when it failed, no questions asked, all they wanted to see was my receipt.

The things that halfords will check are unlikely to be the things that end up being a warranty claim. For example cables, pads etc would be seen as consumables, compared to forks, frames, hubs etc.

So I would not worry about it and remember 12 months is only a guide for warranty, after that its the subtle shifting of who has to prove defects etc.

If you are worried, take it in and tell them not to touch anything!

I'm sure your average Halfrauds work experience chimp will be glad of the extra tea break, you will have your service stamp for your warranty concerns and you know your setup is still sweet!

Do you know any of the people that work at your Halfords store?

Not all Halfords staff are that bad, for instance the person that sold me my Boardman and does my maintenance, lives and breathes bikes. His Dad owns a well respected bike shop in the next town and he has worked on bikes since he was 7 years old. I think he works in Halfords to get away from his Dad though ;-)

Most of what you say there are factory assembly issues and not Halfords PDI work, it may seem wrong (it is) but the staff are often not allowed to address factory build issues they spot even though they want to.
