Suspension jargon?

I have been on the trek website for their recommended suspension settings. It states that my settings should be done as follows:
Front:
Rebound - 16 clicks in
Comp - 4 clicks in
Rear:
Rebound - 2 clicks out
comp - 1 click out
Question is, what is meant by 'in' and 'out' / which direction is each (+ & -)
Also, I know this is only a recommended guide and every rider will be different, but I want to start somewhere. Just not sure on 'in & out'

If you don't fall off you're not trying hard enough!

Just to note, I don't have the bike until next week, just getting a headsup on recommended start settings for when I get it.If you don't fall off you're not trying hard enough!0 -
As a rule, in is from fully backed off (-) and out is from fully on (+).
So 2 clicks out is turn fully on (to +) and the back off by 2. That said, that setting sounds very high for the rear rebound and compression.A Flock of Birds

yeah, but I'm a 'big lad' and those settings are for the 'black' spring

The settings Trek suggest are ridiculous. The adjusters are there for personal preference - play with them, and find what suits you.
In the mean time, look up the terms Sag, Compression Damping, Rebound Damping and Lockout. I believe we have info in the FAQ/0 -
thanks, I know what is meant by sag, rebound and the rest, i understand (to an extent) how suspension works, just wasn't sure which direction was 'in' and which was 'out' when adjusting. If you don't fall off you're not trying hard enough!0

nicklouse - your location says that you live in Germany, where abouts?
i lived there for 10 years, most of it in Gutersloh / Bielefeld then a year in Rheindhalen, best 10 years I had!
however, in all the years i was there, I wasn't into MTB so never visited Winterberg MTB Park (except for skiing), if I knew then what I knew now I'd be there every weekend as I was only about an hour from there.......guttedIf you don't fall off you're not trying hard enough!0
