Has anyone bought the magazine yet and found out which is the CP Bike of the Year 2012!
My nearest shop that sells the mag is 25 miles away so I won't be getting mine until next week.
Cheers

That's a shame. I was hoping it was the Rose Xeon as I'm thinking of buying a Rose bike. Still I suspect many folk will disagree with the bike that Cycling Plus have chosen for many different reasons, and prefer something else.0

Thanks Antlaff0

No Rose bike in the top 5. They were Canyon, Cube, Focus, Giant and Trek.
Rose Xeon was given 4.5 stars though, which was the same as the Cube, Canyon and Giant.0 -
Thanks Ifcquin.
I mentioned earlier that I thought many people would disagree with the Focus bike that was chosen, but I'm wondering whether that is true or whether most people would broadly agree with the top 5 bikes that have been chosen? I suppose the only people that can really comment are those who have tried them all out and if that is true then perhaps the opinion of the CP testers should be taken seriously.0 -
ddraver - whilst I agree with you yet would it not make sense for someone looking for a bike (in the £1500 - 2000 bracket) to first of all consider those that the CP testers have placed in their top 5 (assuming you like the look of the bikes)?0
-
I'd say that having a "less good" bike that fits is far far more important than having a "more good" bike that does nt. The Focus is not value for money if you have to buy a new saddle, stem, bar etc etc....
If you re looking at Rose because you thin it's prety or becasue you re mate has one then, yes, broaden you search, but if you re looking at it becasue you ve determined it's the best bike for you (maybe you ve ridden your mates and really liked it) then no.We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

I ignore Cycling Plus tests since I don't believe that advertising revenue doesn't influence them.More problems but still living....0

In their round up they say that they would hapily own any of the 25 bikes they reviewed.
Which does beg the question, if they are all much of a muchness, why bother with the Bike of the Year competition?
Actually, this edition, with all the pages reviewing near identical bikes, reviews of £120 sunglasses and pages of arm warmer reviews was the final straw for me, and I cancelled my subscription.0 -

Because the old "Top Trumps" style of presenting bike reviews is easily done and appeals to the readership?
I started getting overly cynical about magazine reviews when I was looking at hifi equipment last year. What Hifi and the associated forum are like this place only more so. When magazine reviews decide that you can hear the difference in sound quality between two speaker cables that vary in price by a factor of 100x or more, the terms "snake oil" and "advertiser interests" spring to mind. But that's a whole different kettle of fish.
I like the look of the Focus with the SRAM Force groupset, even if it is "black and white with a dash of red" like every other feckin bike.0 -
I've just bought an Izalco frame and built a bike up, it's a cracking ride and physically i can't fault it, internal cabling, monster BB and top forks.0
-
I'm interested to see what they say about the Giant TCR Advanced 3 (105)..
Mine is due to be with me (Advanced 2 - Ultegra) within the next 2 weeks! (Had it on order for the past 3 months!)0 -

I cancelled mine last year. It's become repetitive drivel for mamils.More problems but still living....0 -

So the winner can use a 'C+ bike of the year' logo in their advertising. Selecting the winner will be easy anyway - just thumb through the last few issues of C+ and add up which manufacturer has bought the most ad space....0 -

Thta's pretty much what I wrote in my email cancelling my subscription. I said it no longer interested me as much and now seems entirely aimed at middled aged sportivistes. I also said there were too many product review, and many of them are of overly expensive equipment.
They obviously have a strategy that they feel works for them though and are unlikley to change. The email (template?) in reply thanked me for my 'interest' in the mag!
Actually, while I am on a roll, the Team Cycling Plus thing winds me up too. Once again, a total obsession with sportives and the members saying how ace their Boardman performs etc. I really don't give a monkeys. In the old days C+ used to cover lots of different bike related subjects. You'd have an article about timetrailling next to a page advert from St John's Cycles and a review of hub geared bikes. Even if I wasn't that interested in some of the subjects it at least made for a varied mag.0 -
Every time I occasionally get sucked into buying a copy as something looks worth reading about on the cover ( tends to be when it's in the plastic bag so I can't browse it) when I actually get it home to read I always feel that I wasted a fiver on it !0

Please do and let me know how many Focus ads you find...Rob Spedding, Editor, Cycling Plus0 -
Must say I was also very cynical but was actually impressed at a Focus winning cause I can't remember seeing a Focus ad in any previous issues (ok there was one in this issue but Focus would be crazy not to cash in).0

I don't read the mag Rob, so I couldn't tell you offhand...0 -

Ribble always have the inside cover spread for their adverts which must be the most expensive space, yet their bike in the roundup didn't do particuarly well (3.5/5). Even though it was one of the lightest and highest spec bikes it was put out of contention due to excessive road buzz through the bar and the steering being slow to react.0 -
What was the Canyon model being reviewed?"That's it! You people have stood in my way long enough. I'm going to clown college! " - Homer0

I've just read the review on the Boardman team carbon.
absolutely hilarious!!!
The reviewer criticises the geometry saying it's not suitable for racing/crits and Chris Boardman wades in basically saying WTF are you on about, this geometry is race proven.

Must do better Bikeradar . . . . . your reviews have little/no credibility IMO0 -
Good to see the Focus win.
Value for money bikes.
Wonder why W*ggle don't seem to stock them anymore? (they 've only got a couple of old basic Cayos left.)0 -
How realistic is some of the pricing of the bikes?
The Van Nicholas Mistral is priced at £1480.99 and is reviewed with Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheels. This price is exactly the same as on LeisureLakeBikes with the standard Easton Aero wheels, yet on the VN website the Mavic wheels are a 400 Euro upgrade.
The Mistral is a great bike (I have one) and well worth the £1480, but the Bike of Year review seems misleading by the 'unrealistic' wheel package.0 -
I must admit that on on hand I was chuffed that the Trek I have just ordered featured in the top 5, I can also understand the view that the mag has become slightly obsessed with product review; the focus seems to have changed from being about riding to what you should (in their opinion) be riding. I would like to see more features on where to ride, fitness and training tips/ideas with some features on the pros thrown in.0
