Bike Storage - hanging it vertically?

Hi All,
I have just bought my first road bike (Giant TRC Advanced 2 2012) and the wife thinks its going in the shed with my Scott Scale 35 because 'we dont have room' in the conservatory...

my question is this: would you advise for/against storing the bike vertically on a wall?

its the logical solution the 'storage issues' my wife refers to, but given that this thing has just cost my over 2 grand i dont want to make a newbie mistake and damage my new ride?

do any of you use this type of system?

Bike storage at velodromes is all verticle - they have rows upon rows of those cheap red hooks that you loop your wheel into. A lot of those track bikes hanging up are an equivalent or greater value than your new pride and joy. Just for God's sake make sure you use the right rawl plugs for whatever you're drilling into. And maybe hang a bucket weighed down with some tins from the cupboard of around 10kg weight for a week to see if it holds.

I fancy getting some of these to store my bikes in my garage. I'm not keen on the distance they would stick out into the room though. Any idea if someone makes such a bracket that's angled, so instead of the bike being at 90 degrees to the wall it's diagonal, at a 45 degree again to the wall or something similar?

I use these. Really well made and not ugly once you've taken off the helmet mounting arm.

I use some red, plastic covered hooks from B&Q, I've put two of them close together so that if one fails (screwed into a solid brick wall, with rawlplugs, not exactly a 'heavy' bike either) then there's a backup.

Much cheaper than that topeak stand, just over a fiver for a pack of two I think. Plus you can bend them to an angle if you wanted.

Three of the only things that I have ever purchased from Halfords, were three wall hooks for hanging the bikes by. Doesn't actually save a great deal of space, to be fair, but looks loads neater.

+1 for hanging the bikes up , looks alot better but use the biggest rawl plugs you can !!

The sound of the pride and joy hitting the deck would surely bring a tear to the eye !!

Bikes can be stored either way. You will need a decent hammer drill and bit bits if fixing to masonary. Great item though.

I've got three MTBs and one road bike hanging from brackets the same as in the previous post. They're all absolutely fine. As mentioned earlier, make sure that you use decent Rawlplugs though.

Depends on the wall construction what to fix them with. I've got mine into plasterboard wall and so have gone for spring toggles from B&Q. They're designed to hold cabinets and so on, so no worries with 4 of them holding a 7kg bike.

Is there any chance of damaging wheels by hanging bikes like this?

I'd like to store all my bikes like this but I was worried about all the weight being taken by the wheel, summer bike might not move for 4 months.

i hang all my bikes - PeteMadoc - why are you worried about 7kg of self weight though a wheel? if thats a worry, how much do you weight? !!!
