.....bracket mounting?

Not bad for 22 years old and a good 8000 miles I reckon. A bit of surface rust by the look of it at the end of the chainstays but nothing too terrible looking.......

Old BB out to be replaced by a shorter one to fit a new Stronglight crankset.

How did you remove it though, a four foot piece of scaffold? ;-)

Does look remarkably well in there though!

Ahhh well, to be fair, the BB had been replaced about 3 years ago so the bike shop that did that had the hard work to do. Though to be fair again, all but about 1000 of its miles have been done since that time. And, as it happens, I just used a biggish allen key plus a mild grunt on the drive side!

I've sprayed TF2 up the chainstays. It's a 501 frame so the rear triangle won't be quite up to the rest of the frame but it still gives me confidence that there are plenty of miles in the old thing yet. Once I've sorted a new (used XT hopefully) rear mech, put on the new chainset, cassette and chain and a new shorter stem so the thing finally approaches my size, picked up the new wheels this weekend to replace the potholed ones...... It should be transformed!

I just bought an old (ish!) Rock Lobster 853 frame, and the BB needs to come out. Have the swear box and PlusGas ready!

I bought a Kinesis MTB frame off Ebay with a cartridge XT bottom bracket that was seized in situ. Managed to get it out with penetrating oil and a breaker bar. Had to work things back and forth to get it going.
Turned out it wasn't seized on the threads but it had an ali cup on the non-drive side and that had stuck to the body of the BB through electrolytic corrosion. The bearings were fine so I cleaned up the corrosion, smeared it with copper grease and it went back in with no problems.

    That's only about 360 miles/year. Poor bicycle.

The basic mean hides a wild variance in annual mileage  (I'd say it has been used for about 4 of the 22 years!)
