For another route out from clapham which is a bit quieter than the A24, head down the back of balham to tooting bec common, across both the commons into tooting. Along Figgs Marsh you can then catch the side of mitcham common and along there. When you get past hackbridge/wallington you are pretty much onto quiet roads. You can take anyone of a couple of roads to either Woodmansterne or Banstead. And you are just over the A217 to epsom downs or walton on the hill.Banstead in Surrey to Russell square and back

wot others said, go out towards Ewell/Epsom and then head towards Box Hill and the Surrey Hills. the best riding around here.

+1 for the routes south east of London, I live in forest hill and it's about 30min to the countryside/start of the north downs foloowing the route of the ride of the falling leaves (see Dulwich paragon website) I used to head out box hill way but I find the roads a lot quieter traffic wise in the other direction. Also the route out is a fairly nice route through suburbia.0
