    Put a cut into a fresh lemon and use as a chain de-greasing machine...Oh no that one works :D

    Paper clips (liberated from office) make a very effective chain, and can easily be extended when you change mechs, undone for cleaning etc. I see no reason why such a chain shouldn't last for thousands of miles.
