ive recently bought my first road bike, im used to a triple geared mtb so am aware of "crossing" the gears, ie small gears on big ring and large gears on smaller rings, being a no no. my road bike is a double chainset so as these two rings are more inline is this still not recommended or can i use every gear on both rings without any worry? sory if terminology is wrong as im unsure of correct terms.

    You're right - don't cross big-big or small-small
If you haven't got a headwind you're not trying hard enough

Crossing the chain is generally frowned upon in the land of roadies too for all the same reasons (excellerated chain wear, less than optimum leverage, trim settings, etc.) as the dark side.

If you have a 10 speed then most folks will avoid the 2 cogs at the extremes of each chainring (as in big ring, 2 biggest cogs and small ring, 2 smallest cogs) but I sometimes use the 'penultimate' cog for short periods without any big issue. It only just clears the front mech though and looks pretty cack so can't be that good for the chain/cassette.
