Changing my rear shock...does it matter which one I go for?!

So, ballsed my rear shock up, and looking to swap from a RS Monarch to a Fox RP2. Spoke to my LBS about getting hold of one and was told that changing to an RP2 might be a bad idea as the valves in the shock are set up for a specific bike...does this make sense? Surely I can just change the pressures and rebound to suit?! Hope this makes sense and someone can offer some insight...

Sometimes shocks have compression 'tunes' that work in harmony with bikes suspension, or has been tuned by the rider/0

OEM ones often do, but retail are 'average' I think.
Mine came set up firm for short travel XC.I don't do smileys.

OEM- Original equipment.
Yes kind of, but the do have a sticker on with the tune - 3 different length lines - one is coloured in.I don't do smileys.

Aaah ok...wondered what the coloured in line was all about haha! does the longest of the three indicate firm or soft setting then?
Supersonic, it's going onto a 2010(?) Boardman Pro.
Another rather stupid question...do all shocks have the same diameter bore at either end so as to fit any frame?0 -

The eye diameter is standard, but you get reducers that are specific to the frame.I don't do smileys.

Every manufacturer claims they custom tune the shocks, but in my experience that just means giving you a high or low tune rather than the mid tune based on whether its a high or low leverage design. Which of course is all made pointless by the fact that the weight of the rider has more effect.... Mainly marketing BS therefore.A Flock of Birds

I think the Monarch is 1/2 inch so should be fine.I don't do smileys.

Some are tuned to work with the suspension characteristics.
