External BB

I'm sure this is dealt with elsewhere but can't find anything, sorry if it's a tired question ....
In the old days, when buying a BB you had to get the right length. But new cranksets with external BB's don't seem to mention this, so how do you know if you're getting something that fits your frame/chainline?
And does the external BB mean your cranks are further apart?
thanks!

The cranks come with the bottom bracket, and all the ones that fit the cranks that are available give a stated chainline (usually 47.5 or 50mm). Spacers are used for shell width.0

And part B not really.
And back to A is a rad cranks set the cups are separate."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
