  • it would look ugly anyway, with all the routing and stuff...

I'm sorry - but that's utter tosh as well. All what routing? Even if it's installed externally, as it is on my bike, it's one wire (in an adhesive sheath stuck to the underside of the tubing where you can't see it) replacing two cables. I'm pretty sure just about every bike could run it internally as any holes in the frame would be tiny.

The who FD story is totally fanciful to me too. If I operate my FD inadvertantly with the bike stationary, it just stops in a very unspectacular way. If it was as strong as you say, you'd have people losing fingers.

It's all part of the utter bolleaux that exists around new tech...

Not any frame can run it internally. The main limiting factor is having enough space where the down-tube meets the bottom bracket shell to slide the Di2 junction box up into the down-tube. The other is the lack of holes in the tubes for the cables to be routed out of (eg at top of down-tube to go to the shifters), but this is more easily overcome with a drill.

im making preliminary enquiries into getting it fitted into my 695 (not entirely sure why but i was ill yesterday so started googling it...)

i think its retrofitable on my 695 and it can all be internally routed

I don't want to get into an iPad debate here because it's been done to death. What characterises those threads and this one is the misunderstanding and misinformation that exists around new technology which is seized upon by those who don't like it.

This works both ways though and it's funny how those who naturally favour the technology and make this sort of comment get it just as wrong as the luddites. Technology is not necessarily an improvement. Often it is but often it is not; just because someone has an idea and works out how to implement it doesn't mean it is a good idea. Each item of technology needs assessing in its own right. So, for example, there are undoubtedly significant benefits with disc brakes on road bikes - depending on how you use the bike (important caveat that) but the benefits of electronic shifting are rather less obvious (but, as with the discs, of more benefit to the commuter than the weekend cyclist). Infact, technology could probably provide us with analogue cables that don't stretch.

You only need to look at the world of cars to realise how misguided inappropriate use of technology can be. It's better to be a discerning advocate of technology - the techno crowd need to learn that the luddites might be right and vice versa.

As for iPads - my non Smart phone is fine but I could survive without it! And a computer at home. Nobody needs them - plenty want them. That's fine but don't confuse the two!

Electronic shifting - not for me. At the moment, it just looks far too crap. But really, the only reason is that I like things that don't use electricity and with nothing really convincing in terms of benefits to Di2 (even Pinnacleroadies very positive review actually doesn't have much concrete to back it up - I can't claim 100% perfect shifts but not far off, I don't need to use trim adjusters on the front and the cables require minimal maintenance) and the like, there is no reason to change.
    Faster than a tent.......

Either the down-tube or the seat-tube - the junction box is pretty small. As for holes in the frame, I'd considered removing the adjustor bracket which on my bike is riveted to the tube - just wasn't sure what it would look like underneath. And, frankly, the external routing still looks better than the cables.

Check www.bike-discount.de for what seems to be (or was) the best price for an upgrade kit. Quick & cheap delivery.

thanks but having done MORE research it appears that i cant run it internally, i dont want to be glueing cables onto my frame so i wont be upgrading until my current DA 7900 falls apart completely.
