Avid Elixir 1?

So I'm building up a budget downhill bike and need some brakes, might go used, but merlin have elixir 1s for £90 a set (160mm rotors, but i already have some 203mm rotors on the wheels i'm gonna use so not an issue), are they the bargain they appear to be, or are they crap? Having had juicies for a few years, they're alright brakes on a budget. I know elixirs are supposed to be even better, but is the elixir 1 as good as the rest of the lineup?

It's fine. Doesn't get the Tri Align gubbings (not a bad thing!) and a heavier, old stock rotor, but does the job. Prefer cheaper Shimano offerings though.0

from experience in the LBS, we found the cheaper the avid brake, the better it will be, higher end models have too many reliability problems with pad contact etc, newer 7 and 9 models seem to have fixed this though. the elixer 1's should be up to the task.
if you fancy abit more, rose bikes have great deals on the new slx and deore brakes, levers are the wrong way round, but its simple enough to fix if you're competent at bleeding brakes.

Both get good reviews, the deore won this months WMB brake test, and they're only £76 posted from rose!! Slx's are abit more at about £1100 -
lawman - If i'm honest, i'm not really that competent at bleeding brakes, nor can i be arsed! Just some thing 'up to the job' and under £100 preferably. Though I'll have a look at rose, i'd forgotten about them
super - did the old J3's and 5's have the tri-align? i got on with those alright for a good couple of years.0 -
If they had loads of washers, yes! I think they did.0
