V Brake Problem

Hi all,

I've replaced the rear brake cable and brake pads on my girlfriends bike, the pads are 1.5mm off the rim. The problem is, the brake lever comes all the way back to the grip when squeezed hard and the brake doesn't feel 'solid'. It's a long time since I've dealt with V Brakes, any ideas what the issue might be?

Thanks.

Pads not spaced correctly. What is the gap between the arms?

    Read Parktools for how to.

    Pads too far away.

Are all the cable sin their stops, especially the noodle?

Thanks, I will check the pad alignment and the routing.

The image below shows the mounting components of the pad, however mine are mounted with the thin concave washed and the thick concave washed in opposite position. i.e. the thick concave washed is directly behind the pad and the thin concave washer the otherside of the mounting arm. How does having these washers in this position affect the feel of the brake?

Changes the angle of the arms which should be pretty much vertical.

they allow you to have the pads and arms correctly aligned.

Ok thanks. Presumably it also spaces the mounting arms further apart, does that then influence the feel of the brake?

Just re-read your post, makes sense.

    Thanks.
