Orange sub5 vs 5

About 6 months ago I bought a sub5 as my first "proper" bike. I've upgraded various bits on it as they've worn out and have now spent approximately 800 quid on it in total. It's been money well spent though , as I'm really enjoying riding it and turn into a miserable sod if I don't get out on it for an hour or so each day.
However, It did get me thinking how it would compare to a new Orange 5 as they do seem very similar , to the eye anyway. Would a new one be worth the extra cash in comparison with what I already have ?
Im perfectly happy with what I have but im sure we all do a bit of internet "window shopping" from time to time.

They were a lighter, shorter travel version of the 5, which replaced it. The modern 5 is still heavier, but stiffer around the seattube area, and uses a pivot in a place that gives less pedal feedback, not to mention 15mm more travel and more up to date parts (headtube, dropout types). Also has slacker geometry.
Is it better? Not as close as you may think, you'd have to test it!0 -
Ah right , thanks for that.
Just one more thing.
I keep reading about bikes weights and 30lb seems to be the level that everyone strives to stay under, for trail bikes at least. Is this the complete weight of the bike or just the frame, as mine is loads heavier than this, yet the 5 is around the 30lb mark. :?0 -
The Sub 5 frame was about 2900g, the 5 frame is around 3200g in 18 inch. The whole bike weight depends on the components fitted too. A little extra weight is not a problem if well used ie you want extra stength, stiffness or durability.0

Thanks again ss. It does have rockshox pikes , kona dh bars and an azonic stem which appears to be a solid Ali billet. I've not weighed these but the front end does feel quite heavy. I had been considering updating the bars and stem , but its got that "just feels right" feeling so I'm reluctatnt to change. I will have to weigh up my options.
Sam.
Ps, it also has mavic 321 runs and hope pro 2 hubs.0 -
That is a very tough, and certainly heavy build!0

I've just weighed the stem and bars which are 1lb 4oz and the whole bike weighs 34lb 6oz. It is tempting to start buying lighter parts but when I think about it I would probably be better losing a bit more weight off myself rather than the bike. At least that wont cost me anything.
It wasn't until I picked up my mates trek fuel that I realised mines a bit of a tank.0 -
There are lighter bars and stems you could buy, for a decent amount of money (read not too much) that would drop the weight in half for those, and wouldn't break the bank. Mainly thinking Exotic Carbon bars here, which weigh in around 160g or so for 750mm width, and various stems which are decently price that don't weigh a ton.
Another place to maybe look at shedding some weight are the wheels/tyres. what tyres are you running at the moment? They are often the most noticable upgrade, as less rotational weight makes the bike faster, and it doesn't cost much to upgrade tyres.0 -
I'm running panaracer fire xc pros at the minute which I don't think are too heavy ? The wheels are quite weighty though but tbh , I've decided not to go down the weight shedding route as I can see it becoming very addictive / expensive. I w ill carry on as I have and upgrade when things wear out.0
