Hi all,
I'm aware I may be told to use the search function more and this question could also be laughed off the thread - but does anyone use Ultremos in London?

I have some ZX's sitting waiting to be used and am wondering whether it's worth fitting them - I only have the one set of wheels and commute 3 - 4 days a week and head into Surrey and Kent on the weekends for longer rides.

If they will get trashed or constantly puncture I won't bother with them. Currently have Krylions which have been good so far but figured the Ultremos may make for a faster more pleasant ride.

Thanks all

  • Used ZXs/R1s in the Summer for commute and weekend rides, don't think I ever got a fairy attack on the commute but did get a couple in the Surrey hills on the flinty roads. They do wear down quickly. If your Krylions are still ok I'd save ZXs for the spring when there's a little less crap on the road - freeze/thaw doesn't do great things to road surfaces and there's lots gritting going on.

  • I was blasting all over town last spring, summer and autumn on Ultremo ZXs, only had two p*ntures. One on a tow path by the Thames on Dartford marshes (hit a massive rock), the second outside my office for no reason. Apart from that they were really fast, and when I removed them after the last incident they looked in great nick.

Schwalbe even replaced the tyre after the first mishap because it has blown in two separate places on the tyre.

Definately save them from late spring though, and whip them off as soon a the calendar flips to November.

They look good, are nice riding, lots of grip for cornering (etc) but the downside is they cut up easily. For riding in all weathers commuting in an urban area then they would be more hassle than they are worth IMO. I haven't however tried the DD version this is based on the ZX

One thing i really liked about them is that they are really easy to take off and on the rims if you do get a puncture - particularly compared to krylions which i really struggle with to get on!

DDs are certainly comparable to Krylions - been running a pair since December and most of my riding is on pretty rough country roads with lots of flints and debris - quite a few cuts, but nothing's got through yet (>1500k)
I'd not consider any race tyre to be suitable for commuting - it's their succeptibility to sidewall cuts that is the main weakness.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
