The Boardman hardtails are always worth a shout, are easy to go and view and have great specs. Also from one of the mainstream brands, the Trek 6500 is getting attention with the fantastic fork they have fitted:

Again, plenty of Trek dealers around. But Norfolk is home to Paul's Cycles, and they have some good deals too, ie the Zaskar Expert:

I do like the look of the boardmans hardtails but i dont like the halfords connection too much, i will have to pop into pauls cycles i can drive there in 15mins, id rather ask on here first though as a shop can sometimes lead you to buy something they want to sell rather than what you want.

I am looking too and think i will go with the grand canyon, or the cube ltd pro.

I keep on hearing about the cube? thing is theres nowhere near me i can test one :(
  • I had an uprated cube attention, and it really does feel like a race bike and loves high speed trails. Unless you have one for the day you won't feel the bike. The only issue i have is canyon are rated highly and the Germans seem to have some good mtb's.

With cheap parts you could build an On One Carbon 456. £299 for the frame, cheap bits and pieces or maybe you have something spare sitting about, or find some second hand bits.

If you fancy building one that is ;)

Cheaper still for the steel 456.

They do complete builds but they're a little over £1k though have quite nice specs.

Is that what you did deadkenny? how much you looking for to build it up yourself,, would be fun and a learning curve and some satisfaction when its all done!!!

Stop planting seeds in my head

Carbon Whippet frame as above, £300.

    Rockshox Reba £270: http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/Bike+Shop ... L-2012.htm

Full Deore groupset (including brakes and wheels!) £300:

    http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/Bike+Shop ... OUP-10.htm

This leaves £100 for finishing kit ie try Exotic cycles. Will be more than 1k all in, especially with tools, but is an option!

Don't rule them out just because its halfords, they are very good value for money. If in doubt, buy it then take it to your LBS for a once over. Truth is with halfords its pot luck whether or not you are dealt with by a spotty kid or someone that knows the score. I bought a Boardman from them and never had any probs. You really get a lot for your money with those bikes. Thats just my opinion but of course there are lots of deals out there on last year's stock and you can find a bargain if you shop around. Cube do some good HT's and are pretty well specced for the money. Also Cannondale but I think they might be a bit more pricey. Truth is for your budget you can't really get a bad bike these days, just check that things like the forks and drive train are as high spec as poss cus those parts will cost you loads to upgrade later if your not happy with them.
If you don't fall off you're not trying hard enough!

Mine was a £900 build but then I got the C456 at £399 so more expensive there, but on the other hand was reusing my forks, cranks, chainset, mech, brakes, stem, bars and wheels from the old GT I cannibalised, however I then splashed out on upgrading to some 10 speed kit, X9 mech & shifter plus 10 speed cassette and chain, then thanks to deals before xmas got X0 brakes half price (£200), £50 off next order at CRC so some carbon Easton bars for £50, and added blingy Vault pedals (got them on the Nomad and just love them so had to get another pair). All in for £900 with upgrades.

All I hadn't upgraded was wheels, forks and cranks really, so add £500 to £600 maybe. Round about £1400, which is about what On One sell a full build, and in my case is an X9/X0 set up roughly so reasonable spec. Could be done for cheaper, just about £1k I think for something reasonable with the right budgeting and deals.

Im thinking along the lines of the on one - planet X (are they the same company?) or looking for a 2010 or 2011 specialized stumpjumper, which would give me the better bike?

Yeah On One / Planet X the same company, just I think Planet X is more roadie and On One is more MTB, though sometimes you see the same stuff on both sites. My 456 frame from On One came in a Planet X box.
