Hi all ive been riding my road bike for just over 2 years, tweaking seat post height's and so on
im 6ft 2" or 188cm in height

ive swopped from my SelleItalia X2 seat to a padded touring type seat to see if the bum pain would go away yesterday my knee was killing me i think ive had my seat over extended for over 3 months the seat hasn't helped either

my inside leg is 86cm with shoe, today i used the 109% setup up so set my seat @ 94cm and reverted back to the X2 seat

i wondered if you could share your seat setup to see what the max and min settings should be ?? i know where all different but it's a good starting point for me and hopefully removing the pain

loving every mile just need it stopping ASAP

there's no reason to assume 109% is correct for you, there are several off-bike measure and calculate methods, they all give different results, i wouldn't trust any of them

you don't mention where on the knee(s) the pain is, it may or may not be related to incorrect saddle position

this may help you narrow things down...

if you can't find a solution, get a professional bike fit, it'll cost a bit, but compared to pain and risk of long-term problems it's a good investment

Knee problem is at the front, it goes away with ice but ride again and its back

ive altered the seat LOWER today to the 109% the power felt better and so does the knee i still believe that i had gone to far with raising the seat the bike felt more stable and even teh old X2 felt better than my padded seat

i was rolling on my padded seat and could never get comfy - im not asking for a cure really im just asking what people are doing themselves - SETTINGS ETC

as you said i will pay to get fit right if i can't achieve the results i need

    cheers for the link appreciated

go get a proper fit done. No point ruining your knees. Bike Dynamics, Bike Whisperer or a good Retul fitter will see you right.

As others have said you need a bike fit - if you keep going on like that you will end up with a problem that doesn't go away off the bike.

Get a bike fit done. By the sounds of the position of the knee pain and sore glutes would appear to indicate pushing too big a gear and maybe hyper-extension? BTW padded saddles can inflame soft-tissue inflammation - better off with the right shape of saddle and decent shorts.

You aren't far from Adrian Timmis in Barton under Needwood. He also does insoles as part of the fit, which may be what you need to sort your knee.

^ you don't need custom insoles if the problem is hyper-extension or pushing too big a gear - they're only of help to address biomechanical mis-alignment.

  • Had a bike fit with Adrian last Fri, great guy and you really get the feeling he knows what he is doing. Had not had too much time on the bike but he did lower my saddle compared to what i have been riding for the last 4 years. Did have trouble with my TLB end of last season, it just kept comimg back every time i rode. Will see soon hopefully if the bike fit helped.
