Frank the tank

Yesterday while out enjoying a celebratory birthday meal with Mrs Tank and a couple of our close friends I had the mis-fortune despite always chewing my food well, to begin to choke. Some food had got lodged in my throat and I was in serious distress and going a "funny colour" I was in real difficulty. My mate came to my rescue by performing the Hiemlich manouver, crikey me what a relief I really thought I was going to the LBS in the sky.

Here's the bit that may make you smile, my mate is a local tory county councillor.

Thank god your mate is not a Labour councillor, otherwise by the time he had phoned the reps from Unison, Unite, GMB and APAP to make sure there was no demarcation issues it could have been your last supper!

My recovery is now complete and no doubt my mate will remind me how lucky I am to be here come county council elections.

I was at a birthday party the other week, and the chap next to me suffered exactly the same thing. Textbook choking (if you've done First Aid and have seen the video), and the chap opposite asked exactly the right questions (can you breathe at all?... are you choking?) and immediately gave a hearty slap between the shoulder blades which dislodged the offending food. (You should always try that first, as it's less likely to cause broken ribs etc. than the Heimlich manoeuvre, but it has to be a properly hard slap that might hurt!) Bloody scary for the chokee, though once he'd regained his composure, he sat down and completed his meal. But the whole incident was over in about 30 seconds, thanks to the coolness of the person who administered the slap. First aid that truly is life-saving.
