Ultegra bb upgrade

Im looking to upgrade the bottom bracket (well the full group set) on my Scott speedster but I'm a little confused when I look at the bottom bracket. The one on the bike seems to screw into the threads but the Ultegra one seems to have a lip on it so when it is screwed in you can't see the threads. Do I need to get the same type of bracket, some type of internal one where the threads are still viewable when it's screwed in, or does the ultegra one work with the Ultegra crankset.
I'm not sure if I've made it clear, I've included a picture of the current bottom bracket from the lhs. Would a standard 6700 bb fit this but have two collars?
I'm new to the specifics of bike mechanics so you'll have to forgive me if this is simple or if it's already been explained. I just want to certain with all of this and I know there will be some experts here. Thanks in advance for any advice

  • No, your bb is older than hollow tech 2. It is probably an octal ink and you need it to match the crankset splines

  • There are numerous different bottom bracket types and standards but the bottom bracket shell (part of frame it is screwed into) will have one of two threads, either a "English" or "Italian" (almost certainly English). This means, in theory at least that a 6700 will fit, as will a cartridge type as you have now.

What is important is the type of chainset you intend to use.
If you are replacing the current chainset when you upgrade your groupset then you need to get the bottom bracket which fits. For Ultegra 6700 the bottom bracket and chainset are Hollowtech II for the 6500 it was Octalink neither of which are cross compatible.

    I hope this makes sense.
  • Thanks for the replies. Yes, I think that makes sense, I would be hoping to get the ultegra crankset with the matching bb, but what I was wondering is if I needed to get an ultegra cartridge type, but from what I understand, the 6700bb will fit into the bike with British threads and will work properly with the 6700 crank.
  • Of course,

threads are one of the few things that haven't changed over the past 60 years at least.. all you need to know is whether you need an English or italian BB... that depends on the frame... 36x24 is italian 1.37x24 is English

Scott Speedster will be English thread.

If you are buying a 6700 chainset, then a 6700 BB is made for it
  • Perfect, thanks for that guys. It wasnt the chainset/bb arrangement I was worried about, but if the bb was suitable for that bike, but that's perfect. cheers guys
