Simple question, can I fit a 11 or 12-28 cassette with a standards cage 105 derailleur or will there be problems?

The spec for a 5700 rear mech states max 28T rear sprocket with an overall 33T capacity. With your 12-28 you are using 16 of the 33 capacity so would be fine with either a 53/39 (14T difference on chainrings + 16 rear = 30T overall) or 50/34 compact (16T difference + 16 = 32T overall)0

the newer mechs (5700, 6700..) are rated to 28t no problem
the older ones are only 27t officially but - in most cases - you can squeeze it to 28t by adjusting the tension screw, and making sure your chain isn't too long.Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0
