External bearings

Hello,

I woild like to convert my crankset from Shimano Octalink to an external bottom bracket style. Do I have to use a specilal tool to strip the paint back to make the bottom bracket true where the bearings would tighten up against?

    Yes you have to face the BB shell.

    You do not have to face the BB, but it is normally advised

    Got a crankset that is really worn, think im just going to replace the chain rings now as LBS reccons he would charge £40 to face the bb shell.

    I went from Octalink to external, didn't face the frame as was told it wasn't really necessary. Experienced no problems since.

    That's very steep, it's a 10 minutes job... If the equipment wasn't so bloody expensive it would be another DIY job
