Going to buy a road bike on Cycle Scheme, LBS have the Giant Defy 2 or 4 in stock in my size, trying to make my mind up whether the 2's worth an extra £200 over the 4, but that's another topic, unless anyone wants to comment?

I'd like some clipless pedals and shoes, with the proviso that I can also use the shoes for mountain biking when I get my confidence up on the road bike, any recommendations please? Cheers. :)

shimano M540s spuds and Spesh BG shoes, with the buckle if you can afford it.

Shimano shoes as a second choice, again buckle type are better.

Make sure you try the shoes on - don't buy over the web. Cycling shoe sizing isn't as accurate as normal shoes. Also bearing in mind that your feet will expand as they sweat. I sat in the shop for 30 minutes with the shoes on to make sure I was happy with the fit.

    Thanks for the replies.

Buying everything from my LBS on the scheme, so I'll be sure to try everything on properly first. ;)

When looking at MTB 2 hole style systems, don't just check out Shimano SPD, have a look at Time ATAC systems too. Slightly wider contact area, a bit more float and the clip in/out can be a bit more positive.

    Thanks for the replies.

Going with the Defy 4 at £599 with a decent set of clipless pedals and shoes to match, will decide once the bike's in stock which ones are most suitable and comfortable.

My thinking is, it's my first road bike for 20+ years, if I don't get on with it, I can sell it on and not lose a stupid amount of money, and if I do like it, I can buy a better one in a years time once I've paid this one off.
