which stem?

Just tried a 70mm stem on my trance and felt much more in control on some downhills last night. The 70mm was loaned to me (by LBS) so I want to go and buy one from them, they had little in stock but I am sure will order one in. Having had a look around there is a lot on offer with a huge range of prices. So, should I just go for a new variant of the loaner (a truvative I think), or a giant, or.....

What is a good make, what should I avoid and what sort of price range is reasonable?

loaner is for sale at £10 but I am a snob and dont really want an old stem on a new bike

Stems are much of a muchness. I'd go for the one you have tried, as it works!

For less than £25 there is this:

Solidly built, but decent weight still. Is no need to pay more than this for a stem unless you must have the very lightest.

I'd just buy the loaner for a tenner - ride it for a month and see whether you even notice it's "used"

Only 2 components (ifnorintg cables) on my bike were bought new!

You've gone from what to 70mm? Superstar do a great little 80mm for about £14 new, just stuck one on mine for £7! (pre-loved of course!)
