DIfferences between Shimano and Campag 10-speed Chainsets

Hi,

I've got a mostly Campag shod bike (10-speed Centaur 2010) but the chainset is a Sugino Mighty: http://www.suginoltd.co.jp/english/chainwheelset_MightycompPE130s_english.htm

Works OK but the front mech (Campag) has to be set up with a range of 4 clicks (5 positions) to avoid rubbing at the extremes - whereas Campag recommend 3 clicks (4 positions) for the front mech. This means that it can be a bit clattery and indecisive in changing chainrings in some gear combinations.

The website bumph gives the compatibility details for this chainset as:

Compatibility :
SHIMANO 10s(7900)
SRAM 10s
SHIMANO 9s

Chain Line : 43.5mm(CBBAL-110)

So, I'm wondering if Shimano/SRAM 10-speed chainsets have a greater distance between the chainrings compared to Campag 10-speed chainsets? Which could explain the need to push the front mech further than what is idea.

Cheers.

  • If you can get one of the last ultra torque chain sets available at slashed priced on rubble, do so.... It is the best chain set among the three main brands.... Oherwise go for shimano.... Easy to install, easy to service.

  • I think it's much of a muchness in terms of spacing. The 4 vs 3 clicks wouldn't overly concern me (maybe you need to tune the stops a little?) but if you're having shifting issues this could well be down to the chainrings themselves and either a lack of ramps/pins or not so good ramp profiles. Maybe? This would be the first thing I'd check - I've run 9sp chainsets on 10sp setups without any problems, and I can't see why this would cause particular issues.

Cheers - but I've spent hours trying to get the the front mech right. It's just that the distance covered by the mech over the three clicks doesn't cover the two rings properly. I've tried checking cable routing through the clamp, cable tension, stops, mech hight and orientation, the lot. The chain picks up nicely when it goes, it's just I can't seem to place the mech stop positions so that it's changes nicely in all rear derailleur positions (barring cross chaining).

The rings look decent enough - I can't find anyone selling the chainset in the UK but the US and Japanese sites selling them have them for the equivalent of about £200-£250!!! They're CNC machined with very complex ramping and pins. So I don't think it's down to poor quality componentry:

Maybe it's just one of those things - chainring ramping, that particular mech and the chain I'm using.

Bit stumped to be honest - I might take a pair of vernier calipers and surrupticiously wander around the local bike shop taking measurements :)

Well I was always under the impression that Shimano and Campag were incompatible??

    Sram and Shimano OK though.

The distance between the chainrings is almost exactly the same for any 10 speed drivetrain, so I'm struggling to try and understand what the issue is here.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

It's all Campag except for the chainset, which - as Monty Dog says - should be near enough identical for all 10-speeds. All very odd...

Checked the Campag tech docs and it has the distance between the pitch of both rings as 7.7mm. I measured it as best I could on the Sugino and it's the same. So it must be the front mech setup or cable. Time to strip it down and restart - again....

FWIW when I ordered a bike from Ribble 2 yrs ago I asked for 105 groupset but they had no 105 chainsets in the size I wanted so offered to subsitute a Centaur Ultratorque c/set instead, keeping the rest of the groupset 105.

So I would guess, if they were happy doing this, then there SHOULD be no compatibility issues.
