Fitting a front mech cable

Hi folks
It's my first time on the forum so please be gentle. I'm replacing the mech cables on my MTB, but I just can't get it right with the front one.
I've got the rear mech sorted (just a Deore), but getting the tension right on the front is proving a nightmare. It's only an Acera top swing, but when I fit the cable with various attempted tensions, I can't get it to swing across to the big 'un. I realise I'm probably doing something fundamentally wrong, but I'm getting fed up with it now.
Help. Please. :x :x
Cheers

read the how to on Parktools and follow it.
link below."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
