Brake/gear lever positioning

Hello,
I'm getting into this mountain biking and have seen many recommendations to move the brake levers in-board for more powerful braking. I've moved mine in a bit, but do you guys think I should move them some more?
My gear levers are getting pushed quite far down the bars, so can I swap the gear and brake levers around, so the gears are nearer the bar grips? Do I need to adjust anything with regards the cables (or any other part of the set up), or can I just move the levers without worrying about anything else?
Sorry for the rookie questions, but I'm learning!

Move them until they feel comfy, try them and keep adjusting till you get them spot on, yes gears on inside but you may have to take the view window off them.0

brakes inboard gears outboard.. this way you will have the lever inline with your index finger for one finger braking.. and the other 3 fingers on the grips for maximum control...
see here to give you an idea.

Ah cool, thanks guys. I'll give it a go later.
Regarding taking the windows off the gear shifters, I had a quick look on Shimano's website and there are base plate hole covers to put on after they're removed. I don't think these were included when I bought the bike, do you know if they are tucked away inside the windows somewhere, or should I order a pair online before I do anything?0 -
just use puncture repair kit, scabs etc or some gaffer tape cut to size.0

They are SLX right?
The caps to cover the hole are on the back of the widows you are taking off - at least they were on mine...0 -
Yes, they're SLX. I'll have a look on the backs of the windows, thanks for your help. If not, I'll try a puncture repair patch as 1mancity2 suggested.0

Ok, I think I've done it. There were caps on the backs of the SLX windows, which was handy. Moved them down a bit anyway, I'll try them at the weekend and see how it goes!
