I think I may have found the perfect winter/play bike on eBay... a 2010 Avalanche, hardly used (road only, and not much judging by the tyres) for £235
Forks - RockShox Tora 302 with 100 mm travel
Front Deore and rear XT
Brakes - Tektro Auriga comp, hydraulic (not sure about these, yet - seem a bit grabby, and that front hose needs shortening)
Going to swap on my MG1s (new Nanos for the Anthem) and try a Sunline V1 745 riser bar on a 65mm stem (on order from CRC).

First ride tonight - 30k. Took a while to get used to the riding position as the GT is much shorter than the Anthem, and feels much more upright. The wider bars should help, I think, as it feels a bit narrow at the moment. But great fun, especially going down. After a bit of fettling I think I've just about found the right position, but the saddle may have to go.
One lesson learned... don't just check the gears, check the derailleur stops! I managed to unship the chain right off the cassette which could have been nasty.Vitus Sentier VR+ (2018) GT Grade AL 105 (2016)

Sorted... shorter stem, wider bars, winter tyres, better saddle and some MG1s. Oh, and some mud.

should really start riding my hardtail in winter, its hard though, the bouncy bike is comfy over rough ground!!

No plans for any more mods at the moment... can't really afford it, but to be honest it seems a pretty good set-up with no major weaknesses.
