So...
I have a mtb frame and alas no space at home for N+1. I also can't join the cycle to work scheme till december.
The generous frame I have will (I think) allow for 700/29inchers. Obv with vbrakes I am bit up the swannie. This is also to allow me to get better mudguards that aren't fucking ugly or useless on 26inch wheels.

So - the idea could be to get disc brakes and those combo kits you can use on a non-built for it frame obv along with bigger wheels.

Thoughts from the hive massive?

  • I got some very reasonable quotes from framebuilders to add brazed on disc mounts, better than any adapter I'm sure?

Yep. I was quoted £65 to add disc tabs to my 1999 Aluminium Trek Frame, by http://www.vernonbarkercycles.co.uk/

My bad weather bike is an MTB frame built up as a singlespeed with 26" wheels on slicks, V-brakes, drop bars and tektro V-brake drop bar levers.

Mudguards are obviously a matter of taste, but I think the SKS Commuters I have fitted to mine look OK.

I'm not totally sure that fitting 700c wheels will make all that much difference.

I noticed an improvement when sticking 700c disc wheels on my MTB commuter, I'm not saying it's dramatic (like adding a turbo ...) but it's a decent improvement. I found that 700c wheels + 700x32 tyres fit the frame fine, but were tight on the suspension fork bridge, you could measure the clearance in mm of single digits!

I have the SKS raceblades - size of the wheel and speed plus length of overshoot of the front guard means i end up totally spotted in flicked up shit that comes out in same direction as me but with enough vertial speed (also due to the smaller diameter) for me to then run into it. I run inch width tyres so didn't want really wide guards. Larger wheels would be more efficient too.
