We've booked to go to Abruzzo and I am now trying to find somewhere I can hire a road bike. Does anyone have any experience of hiring bikes here or know anywhere i might try ? A cursory search of the web (in English) does not look promising.

Any help welcome.

A quick search on 'noleggio bici pescara' on google.it came up with these guys in Pineto (which I assume is somewhere near Pescara).

When you say you've booked - do you mean booked flights or booked the whole deal? If you haven't yet booked somewhere to stay you might want to consider a 'Bike Hotel' - hotels offering guided tours, hire, workshop, laundry etc etc to attract cyclists in the off-season

Thanks andymiller. I presume that 'noleggio bici pescara' means 'cycle hire pescara' ? We have actually booked for teh summer and I am the only one interested in cycling so I am afraid I have to go with the masses !

Yep - and a 'bici da corsa' is a road bike.

(BTW Google Translate provides pretty reasonable translations of things like bike descriptions and route descriptions).

I could have sworn that I'd seen a guide to cycle routes from the provincia di Pescara but I can't find it. I did find this page with a number of links about 'itinerari'

    http://www.turismo.provincia.pescara.it ... Sport.html

Including one from a group AbCycle who do cycle tours for 'stranieri' (foreigners) including shortish rides at the weekends. I don't know the details though.

Depending whereabouts you are, I can thoroughly recommend the climb up to Campo Imperatore. Very impressive up there. See the first couple of days of this tour...

The Campo Imperatore is a great place - but the ski resort of the same name is now pretty rundown - when I was there this summer the hotel and ostello were closed (as in looked like they'd gone out of business) although there's a decent bar/rifugio on the left as you climb up.

When I crossed the altipiano on the road towards Fonte Cerreto and the Lago di Compostello there must have been hundreds of motorcyclists out on the road. I don't know whether I was particularly unlucky (ie Italian motorbikers club had organised a big outing to the area that day). A weekday would be better if you have the choice.

(digression prompted by your tour report: i saw a television report on Paganica which seems to have been very badly affected by the 2009 earthquake - and if the report could be believed (and it was credible) a lot of the village seemed still to be off-limits and some of the streets filled with rubble).
  • Hi. I hope you don't mind me coming in here, I stumbled across this post and might be able to help if you're still looking for advice on Abruzzo and cycling? We live in rural Abruzzo and are opening a holiday site this spring aimed at the outdoor and active, particularly cyclists.

Although we don't yet do cycle hire ourselves, I do know a few who do. I can also advice on places to explore by bike, etc. Have a look at our website (http://www.kokopellicamping.co.uk/) and if you think we can help, just drop me an email (contact details on the website).

BTW, you've picked a great part of Italy for a holiday!

We were in that inland mountain part of Abruzze in 2011, and there were still many old buildings held together with temporary structures, loads of people housed in temporary sheds, and the centre of L'Aquila still closed off with army armoured vehicles keeping guard.

That being said, that inland part of Abruzze near Sulmona, L'Aquila, Campo Imperatore, etc. is the most beautiful bit and great for cycling - don't really understand why everyone stays in the build-up coastal bit of Pescara. I guess if you're after a beach to keep the family happy..

Just bumping this...sitting in a cafe and my mate with the bikes has fallen off the edge of the planet so might be looking to hire a bike next week to do the mythological "il muro di Guardiagrele" and Blockhaus...
