I am now using my car for work and its got leather seats. I will be doing about 70 miles per day with a passanger. As I have never used my car for work I want to keep my seats good, and thinking of getting seat covers.

Do seat covers wear your seats the same, as the cover is rubbing agaisnt the leather or what??

I know it sounds perhaps a bit over the top, but I often wear jeans etc and want to minimise marks.

Any thoughts?

    I've had this exact problem.

What I did was buy a couple of spare front seats. One set for work and one for all other occasions. It's surprisingly simple to swap the seats over with the use of a power drill/screw driver. Now I've done the swap so many times I can even do it on my own and have got the time taken down to two and a half hours which is just about manageable before setting off for work.

I've actually got a spare steering wheel and gear stick too because it looks so crap when the leather gets all shiny due to over use but they tend to add another hour on to the morning swap over time so I only bother with them in the summer when there's more light to play with.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who likes to keep things in good order.

I too was worried about the potential wear & tear on the leather car seats.

I did however, manage to avoid the problem by neatly folding my trousers and underpants prior to the journey and laying them carefully on the passenger seat. A liberal application of chamois cream prior to the journey avoided any chaffing to either the car or my seat. I now found I could drive for several hundred miles with no ill affects.

I did encounter one or two strange looks when I arrived at the office, but when I explained my reasoning to them, they soon thought 'I wish I'd thought of that!'

what will you cover the paintwork with. youll end up with a high mileage well used looking car with new seats, unless you have a spare set of wings, doors, boot and bonnet. a lot of wings are bolted on nowdays.

Wrapping the tyres in cling-film may also avoid any nasty mud-splashes and keep them in tip-top condition.

Ok I did admit that its perhaps over the top, but come on guys some of us here match our socks to the handlebar tape when out riding...

I may have just attracted some smarty pants (yet funny I admit) responses, so ill take note of your suggestions then throw it in the bin. Oh and Skyd0g I like the chamois cream idea as that will also feed and protect the leather – genius

Put your passenger in the boot. Then you'll only have one seat to worry about.

Please ignore the above remarks - they are obviously silly, immature and the posters don't actually realise the severity of the potentially worn looking seat situation.

I suggest that you wear leather strides at all times - the two materials will be compatible and therefore there won't be any wear marks. If you are going dogging that evening you can swap your nromal strides for chaps for easy access to Little Ohara227. Thinking about it, you could wear chaps all the time in case you fancy bashing one if you're stuck in a particulary tedious traffic jam/outside the local sixth form college.

If you fancy having a more dramatic persona, get some leather motorcycle trousers, angle grind the knee sliders so that people who don't know you think that you are John McGuinness and just tell everyone that you came to work on your turbo nitrous Hyabusa 1.6 Ghia with an extended swingarm and Renthals and a Ford Mondeo rear wheel you fitted specially because of the standard one couldn't handle the increased power of the turbo nitrous big bore you've fitted.

Or just sit really still at all times and never, ever move any part of your body except your feet and arms. Maybe your head, but beware of headrest rub/wear issues.

Thought they were only for taxi drivers? But don't you get a free cd to hang from the rear view mirror with those?

WTF? Why spend all that money on leather seats and then cover them up?? I had leather in my last car and it still looked perfect when the car had 70,000 miles on it. Leather is also far easier to keep clean in my humble opinion.

Maybe you should just MTFU and ride your bike instead?

Get a car with hard wearing cloth seats. Modern car leather is crap anyway - it's full of plasticers, fake leather aroma and the texture is embossed because nobody wants irregular (ie real) texture! It's taken many years but the car industry has finally succeeded in creating the perfect vinyl look leather!

Use it as an excuse to do those quad strengthening exercises where you sit down but hold yourself and inch or two off the seat itself.

That way your seats will remain perfect, you'll develop huge Hoy like quads and you won't have to wear chaps.

Ideal solution, but I'd go with chaps anyway (just for aesthetic reasons).

  • seat covers on a roll,

you could change for a new one every day of the week or when the other one gets dirty from eating all them pies and chips in the car and so you don,t get it on the steering wheel, theres a cover for that too,

    Sorry for bumping...just my experience...
I bought mine from CoverKing through Amazon https://wheelstips.com/best-car-seat-covers I saved about 50%, but I had a similar issue. They actually had the EV as a menu choice, but not for 2012 or 2013, only 2014. That made me nervous but I ordered them anyway. It took a long time to get them (4 - 6 weeks?). When I got them I installed the front and they fit great, except the headrests was like stuffing 10lbs of potatoes in a 5lb sack. Then I put the rear on, but they didn't have the cutout for the recline/fold lever, and were a little "off" in other areas. I worked with customer service who wanted me to re-order the same thing I already ordered, only they assured me they would send the right ones this time. They wanted me to place a new order at no cost, but I argued that I shouldn't have to go to the end of the line and wait another six weeks only to find out I might still have a problem. Over about two weeks of them trying to figure out what went wrong and why I got the wrong ones, I finally told them I didn't care about the cause, could they please send me the correct covers. Ultimately they sent me new covers for the back, but then deleted my service ticket and I never got anywhere on the front ones. They all fit pretty well (WAY better than any generic covers) so I have them to this day. The look sharp - Black with dark blue seating surface.

I am happy with them, though after a year the driver seat is showing wear from getting in n out of the car. Better the covers than the OEM seats and fabric. However, I got cloth covers so they do not protect the original seats from spills.

Not sure you read past the title... But welcome to the forum anyway.

Why choose a 6 year old post to reply to as your first ever post ? Its not like you're plugging a wonder product either.

Have had leather seats on last two cars. This stuff does the job, even use it on our leather sofas.

My genuine suggestion was going to be a spare interior from the breakers, taxi driver stylee. Then I realised that the thread is 6 years old and stopped caring.
