True for how long?

New mtb and front has gone out after 3 rides, had it trued at the LBS who said the wheel was laced under uneven tensions and due to this the nipples aren't straight and will untrue again in the near future. I roughly understand what he is saying but I don't know if this is possible/correct, does this sound right? They then recommended getting a new wheel from the seller.
Was purchased at a large motoring shop chain (that I didn't trust to true it tbh - another story) who think it looks fine but are going to get another opinion from a larger 'LBS' before replacing the wheel. Fairshout, happy enough so with all this but...
Out of interest, how long would you expect a wheel to stay true from a new a bike?
Almost a 'how long is a piece of string' question with different variables such as the bike manufacturer and the type of riding done but what about in your own experiences?

Any bikes I buy in the future I will get the wheels slackened off then re-tensioned as I no longer trust wheels from an OEM factory.
The back wheel on my enduro (£2k bike so hoped it would have decent wheels) didn't last long before the spokes started snapping but the custom built wheels I bought to replace the standard ones have taken a couple of years worth of abuse without flinching.0 -
WHat are the wheels, and how much did you pay?0

standard voodoo's stock rims - £400ish but apparently it was originally '£600' ;-)0

I smell a bit of bullshit there."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

My stans flows have done something like 4-5000Km and they are still perfect. 3rd set of bearings though.0

As nick says, the LBS is not doing a good job. If he has trued the wheel, he should have retensioned it. The fact he thinks it will go again shows he is not confident in his own work.0

Update:
The other 'not so local' LBS pretty much said there was nothing wrong with it and it the wheel would have uneven tensions due to the hub being slightly longer on one side than the other due to the disc mount. Again - clueless on this and taking their word on it all. But big kudoz for the guy taking it to another LBS to get another opinion - gone beyond what I expected.
Well the wheel is true for now so time to get back on the bike!
Thanks for everyone's input and if anything I will take away...mrmonkfinger wrote:cheap machine built wheel, minutes

That's true enough. On the rear, all the left side spokes will be lower tension compared to right side. On the front its the other way around, the right side spokes are lower tension than the left side.0
