2nd hand Trek 1000 as first decent bike

I'm looking at one for my son, with Sora and aluminium forks. I have two questions. Is there anything particular I should be looking for? I winged it buying my own bike second hand and got lucky but if there are known weaknesses etc I'd be grateful if you could let me know. Second, what would be a fair price? They're getting old now I think but I don't know how well the value holds up. It's a small frame (50) if that makes a difference (smaller market compared to say a 54?). Thanks in advance.

Check the frame for cracks and rust, good trick is to try and get the seat post out and see what the post looks like i.e all rusty and wet means the frame has pretty much rotted.
Look at general upkeep of bike, could even check out the cassette and chainrings to see how worn they are and chain.
£200 - £300 for a good condition trek i would say.
I think you are doing the right thing going with a bigger brand for a bike he will grow out of in a couple of years you will get the best equipped and usually half decent colours.0 -
I wouldn't pay more than 200 quid for a bike that old and no warranty. 150 if c.ondition is fairx-x-x-x-x-x-x-x

Thanks both. Haven't seen it yet but he wanted 200 and have tentatively agreed 175 subject to condition so that sounds fair on both sides. The tip about taking out the seatpost is good, and one I wouldn't have thought of. Much appreciated.0

£175 is too much IMO. Absolute max £150. Bear in mind that it has alu forks which only very, very cheap road bikes have these days and it has Shimano's (nearly) bottom of the range groupset.More problems but still living....0

I have a (second hand) 2004 Trek 1000 - great bike to get started, but I believe that was the last year that came without carbon forks (see http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/2004/archive/1000# versus http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/2005/archive/1000), so you're looking at a 8 year old £500 bike there. Of course, there may be some modifications or upgrades made to the bike since it was original, but i'd be overjoyed to get that much back for mine!0

My previous road bike was a Trek 1200,one model up from the 1000 and with the same frame. It rode like a much more expensive bike and had no issues with it in 3years of use.
Bought it 2nd hand for £275 and sold it for the same money, though it was in very good condition.2006 Giant XTC
