Aged forty one and bits of me are packing up left, right and centre.

Just had the peepers checked and, a couple of hundred quid lighter, I've got glasses on order

It's not all bad though - who knew you could get glasses in titanium lugged carbon fibre? With slightly orange tinted lenses for that 'world is a nicer place' look on an overcast day?
FCN 5 belt driven fixie for city bits
CAADX 105 beastie for bumpy bits
Litespeed L3 for Strava bits

Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast.

I've had to wear glasses since I was 4 years old. I was that kid on the class who always had a patch over one eye

You get used to the glasses thing, although waking up in the morning and needing a pair of glasses to find your glasses is a bit of an issue

Hot Tip - for really clean lenses use hot water and fairy washing up liquid. This removes the grease build up. Or just get contact lenses.

Hot tip - don't use Fairy Liquid. It contains salts that can scratch the lens and remove the coating.

Ecover washing up liquid is better, or a mild hand soap

Two of the most heartbreaking things:

Waking up in the morning having forgotten or simply not being able to find your glasses.
I looked for them for so long - upturned my bed - that I gave up in the end and just laid there, in my bed, waiting for my parents to come home and help. I couldn't see so I couldn't do anything else, I even had to call in sick at work and explain that I couldn't find my glasses. I was 19.

Waking up having forgotten to take your contact lenses out the night before
There is always a brief moment where my reaction is literally "HANG ON A SEC, I CAN SEE!!!" and I'm really happy. Like the second most happiest time in my life after my son being born. And then there is the immediate deflation when I realise my contacts are still in. Sheer unbridled pain that is.

you sound like my old mum. A few years ago she said 'I have to wear my glasses all the time now, isn't that terrible? '

So freaking what was my reply, you are in your mid-60's; I've had to wear mine since I was 14.

  • I've been wearing glasses since I was 5. Quite short sighted. Got really excited one morning after a night out because when I woke up I could see and read the time on the alarm clock not more than a foot from where I was lying. It took about an hour before I realised it wasn't a miracle but that I had failed to take my lenses out when I got home, doh!

I got warned couple of weeks ago that verifocals are not more than a few years away, all Ivan say is thanks dad
  • i wear glasses for long distance and used to only wear them for driving - my glasses didn't see the light of day outside of the car.

Then i decided to invest a bit of money in two new pair of glasses, i'm much happier wearing them in public, i wear them much more often and now use them to get a different look
  • One of the best things about being short sighted ( the only thing :( ) is as you age the changes are less, until you start to change back :? I have worn glasses since the age of ten but my prescription has hardly changed for the past ten years. I started wearing contact lenses some five years ago and they are great for riding the bike, also swimming (not recommended) and general outdoorsy things. Your eye test is free once you are over 60 years of age. Who said old age sucks??

Hot Tip - Fairy Liquid doesn't contain salt(s) (where did that myth come from?). It certainly won't scratch the lenses and I very much doubt it will remove the coating (unless the coating is rubbish). I worked manufacturing and developing the processes to make Fairy Liquid for nearly 11 years. I won't get into a debate about Ecover but there's a load of rubbish talked about that too. Ecover will clean your specs - you'll need more to do the same job though. Many window cleaners use Fairy - go figure.

Anyhow, forget the specs and get contact lenses. I need specs and actually still have the same "John Lennon" NHS frames I got 30 years ago (always excites opticians) because I wear them so little. Specs are horrible things - distort the world, steam up, reflect etc etc. when I was wearing specs I was an average clay pigeon shot - when I got contacts I was runner-up in the students' national championships. Contacts are fantastic.

  • Single use disposable contact lenses. You can even get them for astigmatism. As a lifetime wearer of glasses, these have had made a huge impact on my life.

Yup - any sort of contact lens (I've settled on monthly because they have better oxygen transfer apparently) is so much better than specs. I've been wearing them 30 years now.

I'm going to the quacks about my eyes tonight. Not a problem with vision but this cold has really aggravated my eyes. My right eye has been badly bloodshot for the best part of a week. And I always ride with a pair of protective specs on. Anyone else suffer with this?

Doubt it's the cold, really. Most likely would be some sort of infection I think. You haven't scratched it or been boozing really, really heavily, have you?

Went to the quack and he's given me some eyedrops to get rid of the inflammation. He said it probably is the cold and I'm just very sensitive.
