Hi,

I'm building up a bike at the moment and have got most of the stuff i need (i think :? )
The frame is a Viking VK500 and its got an integrated headset with top and bottom bearings present and I bought some carbon forks on ebay. The forks are standard 1 1/8th inch diameter but the headset bearings are 1 2/8th inch, i.e. an extra 1/8th inch bigger than the steerer tube so when I put the forks in there is quite a bit of play.
What I'm wondering is if there is some shim or spacer which I'm missing that will fit into the bearings to alleviate this play?
First time I've tried to build my own bike so might be something really simple :D
Thanks,
Michael

have you fitted the crown race to the fork?
have you fitted the centering wedge to the top bearing after passing the steerer through it?

have a read of the info on Parktools

  • Yh i've got the crown race on there. No centering wedge though and after googling I think this is what i need, as i said - probably something i should have known about before hah!
Can't seem to find any online though? any idea where I can buy one? Or do i need to get a complete headset just for this bit?

    Hi,

Are you sure it's both top and bottom bearings that are 1 1/4 inch and not a tapered head tube with a 1 1/4 bottom bearing and a 1 1/8 top?
  • Hi,
Just checked the frame again to be sure, and both bottom and top bearings have an internal diameter of 1 3/16th inch? Still not used to have to do everything in imperial, but they are what I would call 30mm ;)
